Back Story:
When City Market first began in 1857 it was a site for market commerce, horse trading, medicine shows, political rallies and circuses. The market was built in its current location at 5th and Walnut streets in the 1930s.
It was predominantly a produce-only market until the early 1970’s when the area became increasingly more populated and developed. In the 1980s the area was refurbished, using $14.5 million in public and private funds. And then in 2002, the City Market received a Great Markets/Great Cities Award of Distinction from the Project for Public Spaces, an internationally known advocate for Public Markets. In 2007, City Market celebrated its landmark 150th anniversary season.
Impressions:
River Market is a vibrant and friendly community, and City Market is its anchor attraction, (hence ‘Market’ in the name.) This huge market is a sensory delight for us foodies! It’s a bustling oasis of food and culture. The selection of available produce, meats, spices, etc. touches upon nearly every cuisine from Mediterranean to Middle Eastern to Midwest America and beyond. You will also find fresh baked goods, spirits, flowers and crafts made by local artisans. You can barter here, but I’m not sure you will find it necessary – you can find a lot of amazing deals, especially on produce!
A sweet touch: People with little red wagons are standing by to help deliver your purchases to your car… tipping appreciated!
Travel Tips:
City Market has public parking lots that are free, except during concert events.
Public Transit: Metro Area Express (MAX): www.kcata.org/maps_schedules/max/
