Back Story:
The Market has existed for more than 60 years. That’s all we’ve got.
If you have more information about the history of this market we would love to hear it!
Impressions:
There are four major floating Markets around Bangkok. The most popular, (and most touristy), is undoubtedly Damnoen Saduak. However, if you are seeking an authentic floating market, free of souvenir shops and throngs of tourists, you should visit the Tha Kha Floating Market (named after the native long water grass: Ya- Kha). Within a traditional village setting surrounded by coconut plantations and fruit orchards, you will watch as elderly women float on the canal, their boats laden to the brim with all kinds of tropical fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, and plenty more from the orchards and nearby communities. This is the Market the locals go to, and even the merchants are trading and buying from one another, passing commodities from boat to boat. You will also find wonderful prepared items being served up; Noodles, steamed dumplings, hot rice steamed in palm leaves and all sorts of fragrant and delicious soups. Things move along at a lovely and leisurely pace here. On second thought, don’t visit this market! We’re experiencing a serious conflict about drawing attention to this great place. The reason that this feels like a more authentic floating market than others in the area is because it is visited by fewer tourists. It’s just a wonderful scene…that you might consider skipping when making your travel plans.
Tourist-wise:
Just wonderful, friendly people here.
There are boat rental services for traveling to the villages and fruit orchards around Tha Kha Floating Market. To get to Tha Kha Floating Market you can go by car, taking the Highway No. 325 (Samut Songkhram – Bang Pae), take a right turn at Km. 32 and proceed for another 5 Kilometers. You can also take the local buses servicing the Mae Klong Damnoen Saduak Route and the Tha Kha – Don Sam Route from the market in town in front of the Thai Military Bank. There are also taxi services available.
